About GLCS

To facilitate this mission, GLCS supports research initiatives across a matrix of four Research Concentrations:

• Early Literary and Cultural Practice (up to 1800):
Explores the textual and material traces of pre- and early modern political structures, philosophical perspectives, perceptual categories, cultural productions, and social practices; fosters an understanding of the local and global past as a way of coming to terms with the present and future.

• Global Film and Visual Culture:
Considers word/image interactions in literature, the visual arts, illustrations, and film from a broad historical perspective, and also studies visual technology in a variety of critical, national, and political contexts, tracking the broadly modern and dynamic impulse to picture the world and everyday life.

• Forms of Identity (Gender, Race, Class, Sexuality)
Examines the relationships between culture and the politics of various forms of identity, and offers perspectives on gender-based restrictions and rights under domestic, national, and international conditions throughout history, focusing in this venue primarily on literary/representational practices and their relationship to social transformation.

• Post-Colonial Theories
Investigates the relationship between place, time, and identity formation, especially in the context of conditions shaped by imperial endeavors of the past and present, creating awareness of and instigating responses to individual, group, national, and international interactions and conditions in a rapidly changing world.
