GLCS Graduate Studies Support

In addition to fostering an active interdisciplinary community of scholars, teachers and students, a central aspect of the GLCS mission is to attract and help support highly ranked, multi-lingual graduate students interested in global studies across historical periods to the language and literature departments at MSU.  To achieve that goal, we offer support to a limited number of graduate students, to allow such students the intellectual and financial freedom to become fully immersed in that community while making progress toward their degrees.  The funds for this support are generously provided by the Office of the Provost, the Office of Graduate Studies and Research, and the Office of the Dean.

Typically this support package will cover all fees and tuition costs and provide a stipend for living expenses during the first two semesters of study, while the student takes courses and pursues his or her own research.  In some cases GLCS students may have the opportunity to serve as research assistants to faculty working in their areas of interest during this initial year.  During the remaining 3-4 years of their graduate study, GLCS students will be eligible for support through various kinds of teaching assistantships in the various programs at MSU, provided they remain in good academic standing.  Applications should be made to the primary department of study, with a clear indication that the student wishes to be considered for GLCS graduate support.

GLCS graduate support recipients are expected to be fluent in more than one language, to develop their research projects in consultation with faculty from more than one language and literature department, and to engage with the intellectual mission and activities of GLCS.

Application Instructions

  • Interested students should apply to one of the four affiliated Language and Literature programs at MSU following the instructions for their application process.  Affiliated departments include English; French, Classics and Italian; Linguistics and Germanic, Slavic, Asian, and African Languages; Spanish and Portuguese.  Please see the websites of the appropriate department for program application information.
  • Applicants must submit a short eligibility statement (250-350 words) describing their research areas, their interests in cross-departmental work and global issues, and their qualifications for interdisciplinary study, including degrees taken and research interests. The statement should include a header providing the applicant’s name, the department and program to which s/he is applying, and a list of the languages in which the applicant is sufficiently fluent to take courses and conduct advanced research.
  • The eligibility statement should be sent with the student’s application to his or her department of choice, or postmarked under separate cover by no later than January 25, 2006 , or submitted electronically to the department graduate program office by January 27, 2006 .  An additional copy of this statement and the student’s statement of purpose should be sent to the GLCS Director, Sandra Logan, at logans@msu.edu, also by no later than January 27, 2006 .
  • Only those students who are actually admitted into an MSU graduate degree program in one of the four Language and Literature departments listed above, and who demonstrate a commitment to working across disciplines and languages, will be eligible to receive a GLCS graduate support. Our recipients will be selected from among this group.  GLCS may solicit Graduate Support Application Statements from qualified program applicants who have not applied for GLCS support.

Please contact Sandra Logan, logans@msu.edu if you require further information.
